One good thing to note is that there is no save feature of any kind.

It’s full of action and strategy, and for some reason the sparse ending is pretty satisfying. On the good side, there’s a guy called Guru (I refer to him as Naked Santa wait until you see him) who gives you tips and sometimes even a refill of energy.īut enough with details. That’s not all of the enemies, no, as there are bosses that hold your coveted extra weapons/tools that you need to advance. A lot of these guys obviously hate their lives as unnamed henchmen as they will throw themselves off of cliffs for no good reason. You have big turtles, spinning…things, dinosaur-esque runners, and these flying dragon things that at certain times look like strange green Power Rangers with wings. These enemies are worth mentioning mainly because some of them are just downright bizarre. You get these stars from defeating the constantly spawning enemies throughout the levels. You can collect stars which add an RPG element to the side-scrolling as they allow you to build up your Diskarmor, restore your life, or command a brutal (yet limited) attack.

There are approximately 13 stages to traverse, each granting you either access to another place or leading you to one of five essential weapons/powerups.

(Another side note: How do these weird creatures become kings? Is this the result of generations of inbreeding? Am I thinking too hard about this?) But there’s so much to do before you get to this point. Your main objective is to dethrone King Ligar, a lion-like beast with snake minions that spit at you.

His weapon, that spiked shield, is called Diskarmor. Your character (who I refer to as Dude Samus) is nameless yet heroic. Rygar takes place in a realm called Argool. Each level was a new adventure in itself.īut before I delve into the mechanics, let’s talk about the world we’re stepping into. It will ease the frustration level about 1000 fold). (Side note: If you embark on this journey of a game I highly suggest finding maps online. I spent a couple hours on my couch tapping away at the old controller while Katie navigated me through the levels by looking at a map online. Months later, on a lazy Sunday afternoon, I plugged the game in and was entranced. Then she mentioned Rygar and I was intrigued all over again. 3, Kirby’s Adventure, and Ghosts ‘n Goblins, all I could say was YES PLEASE DO THIS. She called me as she found a treasure trove of Nintendo games, asking which ones I wanted. But I soon forgot about it…that is, until my girlfriend went home to New Jersey to see her parents. You had a warrior guy with this crazy spiked shield that put an end to all sorts of nefarious evil-doers. I thought at the time that I should have at least heard of the original NES game.

Full credit goes to the modern gamers who have pieced together these updated maps.Įnjoy this gallery of some of our favorites, and visit VGMaps for more. Others, like the infamous Ninja Gaiden stages, should be burned and never seen again for their brutal difficulty. Some of the work, like Zelda and Megaman, can be hung on walls as art. It’s no surprise, then, that even just browsing websites like VGMaps can lead to hours of getting lost in awe. Plus, we had a high level of respect for those who created the maps, piecing together often hundreds of photographs like maniacal cartographers. While RPGs adhered to that formula best, games like Super Mario Bros and Castlevania used tiles as platforms, ladders, and many other elements.īefore the days of the internet, video game maps were considered gold whenever they appeared in a magazine or strategy guide, they prolonged the life of the books, as we left them on our shelves to one day come back to should we play the game again. From treacherous dungeons to poisonous swamps, the overworlds and castles of our youth relied on every interactive map tile having one of four meanings: passable, wall, action, danger.
